Rare mineature mantle clock with a full size Winterhalder movement, which just barely fits into the small case. This clock is only 11 1/2" tall. These movements were generally only found in the very large bracket clocks. These movements could possibly be the highest quality ever made of any of manufacturers. Very thick plates and all parts machined and polished to the highest standards. It is almost a shame to hide them from view in a closed case.
The case is mahagony with black trim which is either stained mahagony or ebony. It retains its original finish. The clock has a very heavy silvered dial with J.E.Caldwell Jewelers, Philadelphia engraved into it.
The clock strikes on either 8 nested bells or 4 gongs. Nested bells were the nicest sounding chimes and were generally only fitted into the larger cases due to the extra room required. The selection is made by turning the hand on the front top of the dial. The chimes can also be silenced. The end bell was broken at some point in the past, but has been repaired and sounds as it should.
The fast / slow adjustment is also done from the front on the top of the dial.
The finish on the case is not perfect, but is very acceptable. Refinished it would be gorgeous, but I fell the original finish is definetly worth keeping to maintain the integrity of the clock.
This clock is being sold for much less than I have seen them go for in the past.
